The ides of October brings forth a beautiful sunny day and the Socrates Sculpture Park Greenmarket. I was happy to see that the market is still going strong every Saturday through November 19th with all of your favorite Autumn necessities. Grab a gallon of apple cider, some pumpkins for carving (or experimenting in the kitchen) and potatoes to make that seasonal stew. The best part about doing your food shopping there is that you get to enjoy the cool sculptures and great city views.
The Socrates Sculpture Park kicks off the summer with the Makers Market, a fundraising event with local artists’ works that you can purchase. Be one of the first to attend this special event and have your pick at the selected displayed works. The preview event starts Friday June 4th at 5pm for a ticket donation of $50 and goes through Saturday and Sunday for free admission.
Their website describes the event- Collectors and enthusiasts will have the opportunity to meet approximately 40 American makers and shop a broad selection of skillfully crafted one of kind objects, including: ceramics, turned wood bowls, glassware, motorcycles, knives, tableware, jewelry, furniture, lighting, and more.
Some neighborhoods have stray dogs, Sunnyside has Stray Vintage. Similar to small furry animals, you will want to scoop these cute and unusual vintage items up in your arms and whisk them away to a good home. Sure they can’t take the place of man’s best friend, but you will want to go out on the town to show it off! The shiny costume jewelry and polyester shirts are just a few of the things this tiny shop has to offer. You will also find antique furniture, kitchen ware, postcards, magnets, and novelty items.

Passersby will note that The Little Soap Shop in Astoria is not little, it’s tiny! I must have strolled by this place dozens of times before I noticed the closet-sized shop. Little did I know, I was stepping into not only a store, but also a soap factory. I was astonished as the kind sales woman and sole proprietor explained to me that she hand-makes everything- soap, lip balm, and lotions on a tiny counter top in the back of the store. In addition to fabulously unique cupcake soap, there are also handmade cards, beaded jewelry and hand painted painted sneakers. Pick-up individual goods from $2 or create a personalized gift basket.

Sifting through the inventory at Site Design in Astoria will have customers left with little to be desired. In the heart of a neighborhood that takes pride in its tacky decor, I found this little shop to be a pleasant detour from the dollar store galore. This place has unique handmade jewelry, colorful wall hangings, kitschy kitchen ware, and a plethora of knickknacks. Site’s candy colored frames can bedeck the barren walls of your apartment. Their paper lilies can grace your plain old dinner table with their nonperishable displays of vibrant hues. This place offers ultramodern inexpensive conversation pieces and service with a grin.
