Local Talent- The Weekly Song

Posted on August 31, 2009. Filed under: Astoria, Free, Music & Dance |

Local718 is always interested in hearing about local adventures. Here is a message I received from a local musician’s new endeavor- to write one new song every week and then perform in Astoria’s very own Hellgate Social. We wish her luck! Here’s what she said about her new project:

(the weekly song video)

–“I’m born and raised in Queens, a longtime Astoria resident (over 10 yrs now)

Being a hometown girl, I thought you guys might be interested in a project I’m developing where I write and record one song a week for a year – I’m on week 8 and it’s all up here:
http://www.theweeklysong.com

I am booked to play quarterly shows at Hellgate Social in Astoria to showcase the songs I’ve written in that quarter – with lots of special Queens guests (Ms. Angela Bowers of Cudzoo and the Fagettes and Hugo Nowhere of just about everything are just a couple I’ve enlisted so far.)

The first show is scheduled for Thursday, 9/24 Oct 8th.

Would love it if you guys could cover this in ur kick-ass blog. It’s kind of a homegrown project, steeped in Queensness.

thanx for listening to me shamelessly self-promote.
and thanx for covering my fave burrough so awesomely
I check ur stuff often.

cheers,
Jamie”–

Has this rainy excuse for a summer made you feel like you’ve missed out on all the fun you should have been having? August is nearly over but here are a few ways you can say goodbye with a bang or at least a pop.

Visit the Sunday Sessions at the Rise on the Ravel hotel. LIC’s ultra trendy rooftop bar. Equipped with big comfy lounges, DJs, cleavage, muscles, and tans- all within the brilliant New York City skyline.

The nights are hot, cool down with some beer and flamenco at Studio Square– Astoria’s hip new beer garden. David Castellana vocalist/guitarist will be taking you on a musical Spanish journey at 8pm August 25th.

If it’s culture that you’ve been lacking- take the 7 train to the Queens Museum of Art for the August 27th Uruguayan celebration. Don’t forget the final day for the Passport Fridays is August 28th. Get in-tuned with Taiwan dance, music and film starting at 6:30pm.

Art in the Park- Astoria Park hosts Landscape Photography– Get ready to for some mid-afternoon exposure  to some breathtaking views of Manhattan’s skyscrapers, the East River, the RFK Bridge and much more. Bring your own camera. Sunday August 30 12pm
