The Astoria Arts and Crafts Market #10 held every year in astoria may be a small affair, but it’s well worth the visit. If you are crafty or just enjoy crafty things made by locals, then this is a place to check out. The selection is different every year. This year there were endearing art pieces like water colors, crochet scarves, Judaica wall art, soaps, needle point artwork…here are a couple of articles that stuck out…

Uniquely Yours- Handmade by Paola are top-notch homemade cards, scrapbooks, gift boxes and coasters. Paolo’s cards are quite impressive, with colorful detail and unique designs for only $3. They come in all different shapes and sizes, without those corny hallmark greetings. Instead she uses brief but heartfelt messages. You can also get blank cards and make up your own message. Her “star” scrapbooks run about $20 and are available for all occasions- or none at all. The unusual  star shape is a clever design created for optimal display. Ask for more visuals of her work at Paolo’s page on scrapbook meetup

Janie Liu- Handmade Jewelry Janie’s jewelry is unique and nicely priced. It’s classy and fashionable without being overly trendy or gaudy. Check out her earrings, necklaces and bracelets online at etsy

I am now the proud owner of “lotion soap” and a cool scarf, thanks to the crafts market. Also, I will never forget the woman who said my beauty was “unbridled.” She made my day, even if she was, um, a bit eccentric.
