LIC Bar (45-58 vernon Blvd) is sure to please just about everyone. From the comfortable surroundings to the up-beat crowd to the down-to-earth bartenders, it’s all around a great place to go, rain or shine. It resembles an old fashioned watering hole with slightly southern features. The exposed brick and rustic wooden tables fit right in with the classic motown music and the throw-back picture booth. Although there is no juke box, this place feels more like a juke joint than a regular pub or bar. There is a patio out back with BBQ and live music in the warmer months. If you’re looking to throw your own private soiree, there is a back room adjacent to the patio. Whatever the occasion may be this place draws a great crowd with reasonably priced draft beer and hard liquor.

Hell Gate Social Astoria

Posted on February 13, 2008. Filed under: Astoria, Bar-Hopping in Queens, Entertainment, Outdoor Seating/Patio |

1221 Astoria Blvd
Astoria, NY 11102
(718) 204-8313 The long, dark and desolate walk towards the end of Astoria boulevard has a light at the end of it: It’s called, Hell Gate Social. The stealthily located bar is just past the library and right before the river. Passers-by shouldn’t be fooled by lack of signage or windowless front. Nor should they be intimidated by the large steel door. Once you step inside this classy lounge, you won’t want to leave. Hell Gate is dimly lit with art work adorning the red walls. Furnishings include comfy black leather couches or a streamline bar, whichever you prefer. The drinks are strong and very reasonably priced. $7 gets you a delicious signature Hell Gate Lemonade, stiff and sour. The bar tenders are friendly and clientele laid back. In cooler months, it’s best to hit this super sleek place after hours, when the crowd trickles in. Fridays are punk rock night and Sundays offer B-movies and local shorts around 8:30pm. In the summer, the outdoor garden welcomes the crowd with starry nights and various films screenings. Be sure to call in ahead of time for on-the-fly events like live bands or burlesque. The bar is named after the area of the East River that is famous for its rough currents; tossing boats into waters and never returning them to land. But don’t worry, the only currents in this place are the wave of the friendly bartenders and the contemporary atmosphere.

Michelangelo’s Pizza Astoria

Michelangelo’s Famous Thin Pizza
29-11 23rd Ave. 718-932-2096

Michelangelo’s Famous Thin Crust Pizza is the answer to all those thin crust cravings. It’s as if the Gods of heaven swooped down and personally hand delivered this fine pie directly to the community of Queens. Fresh toppings are spread onto a thin crust with edges that are browned just enough to give it a crispy crunch. There is just the right amount of olive oil and herbs to complement the taste, but not over power it. They also serve traditional Italian entrees at around $10-$18. The service is good and the ambiance is nicer than most pizza shops- with table clothes and a clean atmosphere, but not quite as nice as a weekend dinner spot. It’s perfectly suitable for a casual sit-in or delivery.

Dominie’s Hoek 48-17 Vernon Blvd 718-706-6531

Not quite a pub, not quite a lounge, this super laid-back and trendy bar offers cheap drinks and lots of fun. The great drinks and friendly bartenders make this place a great stop on your LIC bar hopping weekend. Dominie’s Hoek offers a rustic feel with a contemporary edge with hanging colored lamps, wood floor, oak furnishings and exposed brick walls. Its comfortable environment is low-key, but welcoming enough to strike up a conversation with the nearby patrons. Be sure to check out the live music on their gorgeous patio during the summer.

Lounge 47 Long Island City

Posted on February 4, 2008. Filed under: American/Nouveau, Bar-Hopping in Queens, Cheap Dining, Entertainment, LIC |

Lounge 47 Vernon Boulevard, between 47th Ave and 47th Rd

This quaint lounge serves food and drinks with a stylish flare. Famed for their Long Island City Iced Tea made with Peach Schnapps (not peach nectar as many thought) and late 1960s beatnik inspired furnishings, Lounge47 is truly hip. It’s a great place to go any time of the year. Explore the large patio with a water-wall in the warmer months. Inside is dimly lit,  adorn with kelly green chairs, colored lamps, semi-psychedelic artistry and trendy leather booths. The small restaurant offers a decent food menu including delicious pulled pork tacos, giant falafel platter and filling burger with fries. The prices are respectable, but not cheap. The crowd isn’t overloaded with hipsters, instead it seems to attract a 30-something sophisticated clientele who want an alternative to the Manhattan scene. The service is friendly. It’s definitely a great place to bring friends or a date.

Masso 47-25 Vernon blvd 718-482-8151

Masso is a comfy addition to the otherwise artsy community of Long Island City. Furnished with exposed brick, candle light,  and a warm fireplace, it’s a great place to take friends or a date. This little place has a full bar offering drink specials for practically any occasion. The menu consists of inexpensive lunch and dinner prix fixe at $7.95 and $15.95 respectively and weekend brunch at various prices. The selection ranges from down-home Italian cooking like giant lasagna dishes and eggplant parmesian to more contemporary specials du jour, like stuffed chicken and greens. Whatever the case may be, the food is good and satisfying and the service is friendly. The atmosphere is low-key but chic. There’s even an ATM in the bathroom, just in case.

Fatty’s Cuban Asian American mix Astoria

Posted on February 4, 2008. Filed under: American/Nouveau, Astoria, Cuban, Outdoor Seating/Patio |

Fattys– 25-01 Ditmars Blvd (corner of Crescent)……(718)267-7071
This is one of my favorite places for dinner and brunch.  And their mojitos?…faaghettaboutit! Introducing many a friend to this gem has practically become a hobby.  Fatty’s gets 100% better during the warm months too, thanks to their lovely outdoor garden area.  The tunes are always audible at this hip joint that also displays the (pricey) ever-changing work of local artists on the walls.  The food is tasty and innovative, leaving you feeling satisfied. The fish n chips, jalapeno turkey burger, chofan (stir fry), fattata (brunch), salmon burger, and Chavorrayo and Cubano sandwiches are all a must.  The owner,  el Fatty is what we call him, is the nicest and coolest guy around who recently opened a sultry wine bar next door, Crescent and Vine.
